graduate in the top 10% of their class from an accredited Texas high school;
submit all required credentials by the appropriate deadline; and
enroll at the University within two years of high school graduation.
For top 10% automatic admission purposes, class rank must be determined and reported by your high school according to the following standards established by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board:

The top 10% of a high school class shall not contain more than 10% of the total class size.
The student's rank shall be reported by the applicant's high school or school district as a specific number out of a specific number in total class size.

2. Rice University in Houston, Texas -
What is Rice looking for in an applicant? As you consider applying to Rice, you should keep in mind that we are not looking for one single trait or quality; there is not a magic formula for "the kind of student who excels at Rice." Instead, we are trying to make a match between the student and the university. We need students who will not only promote Rices stimulating intellectual environment, but also our vibrant extracurricular and diverse social activities. Along these lines, we are searching for students who have demonstrated academic motivation and intellectual curiosity during their high school years.
Is there a minimum GPA or class rank that I must have?
Our admission process is a very personal one; all of our applicants are considered on an individual basis and there are no minimum requirements for testing or grades. In addition, every school district computes GPA and class rank in a different manner, so these are not accurate measures for our needs. Instead, we will carefully consider your course selection and your grades in college preparatory subjects.
What standardized tests does Rice require?
You will need to take either the SAT I or ACT, as well as three SAT II subject tests. While we have no preference between the SAT I and ACT, we do require the SAT II Writing test as one of your three subject tests.
Are there minimums for my standardized testing scores?
We do not set minimums for standardized testing scores, but our median scores are often quite high. The middle fifty percent of the entering class of 2000 scored between 1330 and 1500 on the SAT I. The midrange for the ACT composite score was 31 to 34. Due to the broad range of available subject tests offered, we do not calculate midranges for the SAT II subject tests.
May I submit supplemental materials with my application?
You certainly may augment your application with additional materials, but we ask you to be selective in what you include. Although we require only two letters of recommendation, if you feel it is absolutely necessary, you may include additional input from a teacher, school administrative official, employer, etc. You are also welcome to submit additional class work, lab work, slides, newspaper articles, etc. Please note that supplemental materials are not required, and submitted materials will not be returned.
